Oman’s onshore bid round 2023 is now open, offering blocks in northern, central and southern Oman. All have seismic and well data available in an online data room. The variety of oil and gas plays in Oman is remarkable, and includes some of the oldest commercial oil accumulations on Earth. Oil generation and migration began around 500 million years ago and is ongoing in the foreland basin of the Oman mountains today. The blocks on offer have potential for oil and gas accumulations in multiple reservoir intervals from Pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous age. Whilst the number of petroleum systems and hydrocarbon play types is large, so is the geological complexity. Oman’s long structural history and its position on the edge of the Arabian plate mean that hydrocarbon occurrence is more complex than the relatively protected basins of Saudi Arabia and UAE.
Merlin’s staff have been working on Omani petroleum systems for over 20 years and continue to be engaged with project work in the Sultanate, so are perfectly placed to support and advise evaluations for bid submissions.
