Fluid Property Prediction
What is the hydrocarbon phase in my prospect? What is the likely gas to oil ratio? Will biodegradation mean high viscosity oil and low recovery? Our pre-drill analysis will allow a realistic assessment of fluid properties ahead of drilling, allowing operators to value opportunities appropriately.
Presence of contaminants such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide or mercury can make or break the economics of an exploration opportunity. We can provide an assessment of contaminant risk prior to drilling.
Sampling & Analysis
Sampling and lab analysis programs are carefully designed to maximise information and minimise cost & turnaround time. We work with the best labs in the world to generate data of the highest quality. We also advise, guide and provide quality assurance to protect the interests of non-operators in joint ventures.
Reliable interpretation and clear reporting are critical to realise the value of data. We use our extensive expertise to look deeply into analysis results and translate them into interpretations that are communicated clearly so that they can be used by decision makers and members of all technical disciplines.
We use our wide experience and the extended Merlin Geoscience team to make sense of geochemistry and basin modelling results and place them in the appropriate “big picture” context. Such insights can have important implications for understanding and quantifying exploration prospectivity and identifying overlooked potential, even in mature basins.
Reservoir Model Calibration
Geochemical fingerprints of reservoir fluids can provide insights into reservoir connectivity at the earliest stages of appraisal to aid field development planning. Fingerprint data can also be used to calibrate static and dynamic reservoir models, refine fluid contacts and flow unit correlation at low cost.
Hydrocarbon fluid properties in reservoirs can vary significantly as a result of field-filling processes or alteration mechanisms such as biodegradation or phase fractionation. Such fluid variations can have profound effects on hydrocarbon recovery. Our reservoir characterisation methods can identify mechanisms responsible for fluid property variations and provide predictions to target areas with best recovery potential.
Working collaboratively with our colleagues in Merlin Geoscience and Belltree, we can deliver “Locate The Remaining Oil” studies to identify key in-fill drilling targets for our clients, by seamlessly combining high quality sub-surface geoscience with engineering disciplines.
4D Production Monitoring
“Time lapse” geochemistry fingerprinting studies use analysis of produced fluids and can provide key insights into reservoir behaviour for a fraction of the cost of standard tracer technologies and support (or in some cases replace) 4D seismic surveys. We can provide feasibility studies and ongoing monitoring using proven methods for the cost-conscious operator.
Natural fluid fingerprints can be used to allocate production to specific zones in commingled wells. Geochemical allocation can be done on oil, gas or water. It requires no well intervention or lost production. Our staff have proven experience in developing solutions to significantly reduce costs of well testing and production logging without compromising field management.
Fluid fingerprinting of samples collected in production facilities can be used to provide field or asset-scale data to support well, reservoir and facilities management (WRFM) and hydrocarbon accounting when metering is not possible or is unreliable. Allocating oil volumes in an export pipeline back to 10 individual fields? It can be done – our staff have the experience!
Well and Asset Integrity
Geochemical fingerprinting of oil or gas samples in well annuli or at surface can be used to assess their origin. Working with well engineers we can guide remediation strategies and get the workover right first time.
Our integrated subsurface approach to characterising the origin of hydrocarbons in wells at the end of life has the potential to significantly reduce abandonment cost without compromising effectiveness.
