Our stratigrapher Phil Copestake has been involved in a study, described in a new paper, showing how micropalaeontological analyses can be used to help date fossil marine reptile specimens. By taking small samples of the host matrix of several ichthyosaur specimens and identifying the microfossil content (where present), the fossils have been more accurately dated, thus increasing their usefulness to science.
