Today is world listening day. This is organised by the World Listening Project which celebrates the art of actively listening to the environment around us. Did you notice how much the sound changed during covid when the hum of humanity was replaced by the songs of birds? And then how quickly we got used to the sound of cars and trains again when lockdowns ended.
It is important to take a moment, even if it is just five minutes, to take in the sounds of the environment. It is great for mental health giving you time to reflect on the day. We all know it is easier said than done, however, as we often get caught up in our busy lives.
The staff at Merlin are very fortunate as our office is based in rural Herefordshire. Woodlands are just a short walk from the office and a lunchtime walk is often rewarded with the harmonies of trees and wildlife.
When thinking about active listening, there are two other areas which immediately spring to mind. Firstly, as an employee owned company, actively listening to all staff members is a key part of Merlin’s ethos. By involving employees more in the business, they are more invested and thereby make the company stronger.
Secondly, actively listening to clients is also really important to Merlin. Every client has their own individual requirements and ensuring a project provides what the client needs is key. Merlin actively engage with clients as much as required throughout projects, building trust and cementing strong working relationships.
In short, listening is a priority, whether it be taking in the sounds on your lunchtime walk, making time for your mental health, or listening to colleagues and clients. All staff at Merlin take pride in the relationships we build, and it shows in the project work that we produce.
