Merlin has recently completed a project commissioned by the Oil & Gas Authority (OGA) aimed at describing the risks and mitigations associated with Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) to assist the OGA Carbon Storage Licence stewardship.
Merlin was part of a consortium, led by Quintessa Ltd., including TNO and CCUS experts Prof. Stuart Haszeldine, Iain Wright, Klaas van Alphen and Graham Wadelin.
To build a checklist of risks, preventative measures, mitigations and impacts, the team reviewed 10 operational or planned carbon storage projects from the North Sea, North America and Australia. Lessons learned from these projects were recorded and generalised to provide a single checklist against which upcoming projects on the UKCS can be compared.
Merlin’s participation in the project built on our understanding of risks in the subsurface gained from Oil and Gas projects carried out for multiple clients globally. This project demonstrates our commitment to providing leading-edge scientific input and consultancy to facilitate a low carbon future.
